The Kyoto Protocol sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European Community for reducing greenhouse gas emissions over the five-year period 2008-2012. The purpose of the Protocol is to slow down global warming and related climate change. A new international framework now needs to be agreed to set reduction targets beyond 2012. A United Nations Climate Conference will take place in Copenhagen from December 7 to 18, 2009. At the Conference, governmental representatives from 170 countries are expected to agree on a Copenhagen Protocol or any other appropriate future framework..
Climate change being one of the biggest challenges affecting people globally, it is crucial for countries to be able to collaborate effectively on the matter. One of the key controversies at Copenhagen will be how the burden will be shared in between developed countries, responsible for much of the pre-existing emissions, major emerging economies that are becoming major polluters themselves, and other developing countries. It will be interesting to follow the numerous discussions that will take place during the coming weeks before the conference. My blog will be following these discussions.

I have really enjoyed looking through your page and seeing the comments you have made about certain issues, especially these protocols. I’ve never really thought about slowing down Global Warming which you brought up, I believe, in the prior post. The task of making the world a better place with less pollution and environmental problems is a pretty daunting task, and I look forward to your conclusion. I am also interested to see how these developing countries trying to emerge into the world economy will deal with the pollution they are newly putting out because they have to do so because it is so cheap.

It seems so crazy that they can set these goals and that they, hopefully, will be met. I know the US could definitely make some changes to lower pollutions. The only problems I could see with this world goal is under-developed countries that are just now getting major companies may have trouble affording to change everything in order to decrease their pollutions. But hopefully the US and EU, if needed, will make the biggest difference.
